The Carron Valley Fishery History

Carron Valley Reservoir, created in the nineteen thirties by the flooding of the upper valley of the River Carron, is one of the most scenic trout fisheries in Scotland. Situated high in the Campsie Fells – yet only a ten minute drive from Stirling, half an hour from Glasgow and forty minutes from Edinburgh – the loch offers boat and bank fly fishing for rainbow trout & wild and stocked brown trout in magnificent surroundings.

Since its completion in 1939, the 1000 acre reservoir has proved an ideal habitat for the Carron’s indigenous wild brown trout population. Thriving on the rich feeding of the newly flooded river valley and with easy access to its many excellent spawning and nursery streams, the wild brownies of the Carron Valley Reservoir are now well and truly established, providing some of the best brown trout fly fishing in Scotland. In addition, Carron Valley Fishery stock grade A quality rainbow trout to enable the angler an all round trout experience to remember.

The trout fishing on the loch is managed by Carron Valley Fishery Ltd. Through a careful policy of regular supplementary stocking of top quality trout, the fishery management have built on the loch’s well deserved reputation as Scotland’s premier trout fishery. The area around the loch is very popular with walkers, ramblers, mountain bikers and nature lovers and boasts a wide variety of wildlife, all thriving in breathtaking surroundings. Fly fishing for brown and rainbow trout in central Scotland

Carron Valley reservoir is almost four miles long and three quarters of a mile at its widest point and set in an area of outstanding beauty, where the trout angler can spend a day drifting in and out of the many productive bays, casting a team of flies in front of a solid, traditional, clinker-built boat.

With only the curlews and oyster-catchers for company, or enjoy a leisurely stroll along the bank, where hard fighting trout lie close in along the varied shoreline just waiting to have a go at a well presented Kate McLaren, Blae and Black or Peter Ross.

Boat Fishing

› We have a fleet of 20 boats available for hire.
› All boats come fully equipped with outboards, oars and life jackets.
› Both boats and outboards are maintained to a very high standard.
› Please note that we can now accommodate single anglers wishing to fish from the boat.

Catch limit for boat fishing is 4 per rod.

Bank Fishing

Carron Valley Fishery has considerably extended the bank fishing facilities on the reservoir to enable anglers to enjoy more of the water and its surrounding beauty. We now have four miles of bank fishing available.

Carron Valley Fishery currently offers the following facilities for use by all patrons.

Fishing Lodge

Somewhere to relax either before, during or after your session. The lodge has scales and catch recording facilities and we urge all anglers to record their catch after each session. The Lodge is also home to many boastful stories, please feel free to add your own.

Office / Tackle Shop

A new facility where you can purchase items essential to a good days fishing, as well as stocking up on snacks and refreshments. Permits and life jackets are also issued from the office. Tea, Coffee, Hot and Cold food are also available on request.

Car park

Car parking is available for around 30 cars.

We run various competitions throughout the season, please contact us for details.

We also provide a free information service to non angling visitors who wish to enjoy the local area, including the breathtaking scenery, country walks and abundant wildlife.
